Pattern Layout Day 6: Create Contrast & Unity 5/21

Work with a partner. One person can look up any defintions if needed and the other person can type up the responses onto a Microsoft Word Document. Please submit work for grading and include both your names, the date, and the band.

You need to be deliberate about how you scale your patterns and choose your colors or you may find that your shapes get lost. Using COLOR/VALUE & SCALE to create CONTRAST or UNITY is a way to maintain the definition of a shape.
______________
Q1. In which design (A or B) is the circle best defined? Explain why using one or more of these words: COLOR, VALUE, SCALE ,CONTRAST and/or UNITY
A. LARGE Scale Swatches

B. SMALL Scale Swatches

____________

Q.2 In which design (C or D) is the circle best defined? Explain why using one or more of these words: COLOR, VALUE, SCALE ,CONTRAST and/or UNITY
C. Swatches with CONTRAST
D. Swatches with UNITY

______________
Q.3 How will you apply this learning to your projects?

Pattern Layout Day 5: Fill Shapes - Use Your Swatches Pallette 5/17

You can copy and paste your swatches palette into your Pattern Layout file and use them to fill your shapes.
1. Open your Pattern Layout file
2. Open your Swatches file
3. In your Swatches file select all of your swatches
4. Edit > Copy
5. Close your Swatches file
6. Zoom out in your Pattern Layout file
7. Edit > Paste your swatches to the side of the page

You can scale down your swatches so you don't have to zoom out so far to see them
You can change swatches and make new ones to suit your project

Pattern Layout Day 4: Continue Outlining Shapes 5/16

Please read and review previous posts

Pattern Layout Day 3: More Ways to Edit Shapes 5/15

Remember you can EDIT your shapes with the DIRECT SELECT TOOL (white arrow).
* Make sure the shape is DESLECTED
* Use the DIRECT SELECT TOOL to select the ANCHOR POINT, LINE SEGMENT, or HANDLE to EDIT.

NEW SKILLS
You can ADD or DELETE anchor points to edit your shapes
* Click on hold on the PEN TOOL to REVEAL the hidden tools
* ADD an anchor point with the ADD ANCHOR POINT TOOL (pen with plus sign)
* DELETE an anchor point with the DELETE ANCHOR POINT TOOL (pen with minus sign)

You can edit your new anchor points with the direct select tool!

Pattern Layout Day 2: Overlapping 5/14

Look at your image and try to forget what it is an image of and just LOOK for the SHAPES in it.

Try to outline the biggest "BACKGROUND" shapes first. This may help you find ways to OVERLAP more easily.

Overlapping is a a big TIME SAVER and making your shapes fit edge to edge is a big TIME WASTER

REVIEW
How can you redraw one line segment that is part of a shape?

Pattern Layout Day 1: Easy Pen tool Techniques 5/11

Now that you have finished lesson 4 you now know that you can draw smooth curved lines with the pen tool. But you also know how COUNTERINTUITIVE it is to work with. If you feel like you mastered the technique - good for you!

If you think you need to find another way - read on about Ms. Hooker's EASY pen tool techniques.

NO DRAG METHOD: This is the easiest and quickest way to outline shapes. Simply click to create anchor points and let the line segments stay straight. You end up with a somewhat jagged looking outline. Make a lot of clicks and you'll get a smoother looking "curve".

CLICK & DRAG then CLICK BACK METHOD:
1. Start your path with a simple CLICK.
2. Move your mouse to a location further down the edge of the shape where it starts to curve and CLICK & DRAG until your path is curved the way you want.
3. Now CLICK BACK on that last anchor point.
4. Again move your mouse to a location further down the edge of the shape and CLICK & DRAG until your path is curved the way you want.
5. Again CLICK BACK
6. Keep repeating the sequence until you have closed the shape

Pattern Layout Get Started - Preview: 5/10

If you need to make any changes to your photographic image, like cropping or scaling, you have to open it in Photoshop to edit it.
The purple Digital Camera handout explains how to CROP in Photoshop.
The orange Digital Camera handout explains how to ROTATE in Photoshop.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When your photographic image is the way you want it you can create your Pattern Layout file in Adobe Illustrator.
1. Drag your closed Photoshop file to the Illustrator Icon on your Dock.
2. File > Save As and name your Illustrator file: "PatLayout________ "(first Name)
3. Make your image grayscale in Illustrator if you haven't already ( Filter > Colors > Convert to Grayscale)
4.Reposition your image on the page if you want to
5.Change your page orientation from tall to wide if you need to. File > Document Set Up
6.Lock your image in its own layer: Window > Layers - click the empty box next to the eye to lock the layer
7.Create a new layer and start outlining the biggest shapes with the pen tool

SCANNING
You have to log into Computer 1 or Computer 29 to use the scanners that are attached to them. Read and follow the instructions on the scanner. When you get to the preview window select grayscale.
If your image is very small, ask Ms. Hooker for help to insure that you get the proper image quality.
DOWNLOADING
Use the BLUE HANDOUT on downloading Internet Images
Make sure your image is about 700 pixels wide (with the part of the image you actually want to use taking up most of the image)
CAMERA
Use the ORANGE HANDOUT. Make sure you include the entire figure but at the same time leave a small amount of space around the figure when you are framing the shot.
